Ethical behaviour & sustainability are ingrained in our business practices.

We are dedicated to safeguarding our people, assets, environment, and society.

A sustainable business produces benefits for DENSAY as well. We exert continuous effort to keep ourselves relevant and competitive in the eyes of our customers, employees, financiers, and other stakeholders. We accomplish this by deeply integrating sustainable business practices into our commercial, operations, and technical strategy to evaluate how our actions influence the world and how the world affects us. Transparency and accountability are critical to Densay’s business practises and play a central role in our approach to ESG. Densay’s attitude to and actions on sustainability are informed by a variety of internal and external mechanisms.

We utilise these to develop an overarching strategy for a more sustainable future, incorporating knowledge-based decisions to provide transparency to our stakeholders. We continuously challenge ourselves and our operational processes. In addition, Densay communicates and cooperates with peers and industry stakeholders. This publication illustrates some of the crucial aspects of our approach. It is frequently reviewed and validated in light of our safety culture, how our leaders will conduct themselves, and our strategic decisions.

Environmental

Decarbonisation is a key focus of DENSAY. We continuously work to reduce our environmental footprint by lowering our CO2, NOx and SOx emissions.

Our objective is to achieve netzero emissions by 2050, and we are investing in various technologies to achieve this target. Our dedicated Decarbonisation and Efficiency Team investigates the application of alternative fuels while our operations department optimises each voyage to achieve greater efficiency. As an owner, we predominantly invest in and own eco-ships with electronic main engines and lower fuel consumption. As an operator, we invest in various technologies to improve operational excellence. Our strategy is to maximise our energy efficiency via slow steaming, weather routing, hull cleanings, optimising vessel trim, and fuel-saving devices until alternative-fuel technologies can be developed and scaled sufficiently to meet seaborne transportation demand.

More than 75% of our owned fleet has been fitted with energy-saving devices. We have started voluntarily reporting our voyage emissions data with key customers to inform them of their emissions and to cooperate on how to reduce them further. In 2023, we are planning our first biofuel test voyage to assess the viability of adding biofuels to our fuel selection. Environmental awareness at Densay is not limited to emissions reduction. We take great care to comply with all relevant regulations, such as clean ballast water management and responsible waste water disposal. We take strict precautions against oil or chemical spills and do not tolerate any violation. Our current newbuilding orderbook in Japan consists of DNV-approved Ammonia-ready ultramax and handysize bulk carriers. We have financed these vessels through a Green Loan Facility with Credit Suisse. Going forward, we intend to shift our focus entirely to alternative fuel systems.

Social

At Densay, our most valuable asset is our people. On board our vessels, we actively evaluate and take precautions against various risks at sea such as piracy, spills, collisions, illness, and accidents. We maintain our vessels to the highest standards and regularly train our crew with class-approved drills. Our detailed HSQE and LossPrevention procedures and Key-Performance-Indicators (KPIs) aim to prevent or minimise such risks.

We are Rightship and SIRE members and hold satisfactory scores across our fleet. We have a 94% retention rate among our seafarers which is a reflection of our mutual trust and appreciation. We are an inclusive group and employ people from 11 different nationalities.

We are proud to boast a 44% female share of on shore employees. In line with our internal Code of Conduct, we do not tolerate any form of harassment (gender, religion, sexual orientation, race) and work towards providing a safe, diverse and pleasant work environment both on shore and on board.

Governance

We have a zero-tolerance policy towards unethical behaviour. We respect and comply with all relevant national and international laws, regulations, sanctions, anti-corruption and antibribery practices. Our employees will never accept or offer gifts, cash, entertainment or any other form of unofficial payment to any public or private official.

As a global company operating in many countries, we take great care in training our employees to always act with utmost levels of integrity, diligence and highest ethics when conducting business. We provide regular training to our employees and require them to report any entertainment or hospitality expenses they have been offered to make sure these do not constitute a breach of our company’s policy.

Our risk management and compliance departments screen our counter-parties and chartered vessels on a regular basis to assess potential risk factors such as sanctions and blacklists by governments or organizations. Our internal whistleblower policy, accessible to all employees, our counter-parties and suppliers aims to make sure any form of unacceptable behaviour can be reported anonymously. All reports are directed to Head of Human Resources and the Head of ESG committee.
